The trendy Stoke Newington Victorian period 4-bed townhouse in East London’s Hackney. Single occupied by a family with 1 child who was unable to climb onto the property ladder of buying her own.
With natural parental instincts, the reaction to a problem was to find an alternative solution within the envelope of the existing property.
A solution that gives all the sufficient living space, privacy, yet togetherness.

Interlinking spaces unexpected of a typical Victorian home layout. Expressive full height/ full room width groove panelling with hidden bespoke joinery and the open fireplace piercing through that was stripped down bare as a point to its heritage past.
With stepped access to a social area where to throw roaring dining parties that lead onto a private garden. There is nothing underwhelming about what you’d expect from your 1st-time property, but a subtly luxurious feeling of space and qualities.
Mid-Century modern and warmly minimalist with raw materials, clean lines, minimal palette and splash of bold colours to tie in with the charms of classic style period home and long-life art collection. Comfortable and inviting.

The brief was born out of at times hostile 1st time buyer property market that was stopping the daughter to flee the nest. The design response was to rethink the property layout and redefine the use of its internal rooms into interactive gallery-like spaces.
A key challenge in the design process had been constraints of period home while giving everyone enough living space without feeling cramped all under one roof. Yet retain the quality of a family home.
Avid appreciators and owners of a contemporary art collection mixed with classic and vintage pieces. Our design response was to treat this home as a private gallery space fully inspired by the origami intricacy and playfulness, by the interwoven puzzle principals of colours, textures and materials transitioning without clear start and stop.
With the Russian doll-like idea effortlessly hosting daughter’s 1-bed apartment within its property womb. Allowing the coexistence with privacy yet without the separation to one another.
